Since the 1950s, the Swedish city of Boras laid the groundwork for a sustainable city, notably through the gradual implementation of virtuous energy models that enabled them, among other things, to store the energy from its biomass and incineration plants. In this way, Boras was able, without using fossil fuels, to meet the peaks in the city’s heat consumption during harsh winters.

At its Joure plant in the Netherlands, DEMB (formerly Sara Lee) was looking to reduce the cost of producing the vast quantities of steam needed to make instant coffee and liqueurs. Veolia set out to develop a cost-effective solution to support the plant's increasing production capacity while reducing its carbon footprint and meeting the critical challenge of recycling by-products from the production process.

The Nagykőrös plant, in Hungary, produces canned peas, corn and beans. These manufacturing processes require a significant amount of energy, traditionally provided exclusively by natural gas. In 2010, new Hungarian regulations introduced more stringent criteria for the treatment of wastewater and a whole range of other pollutants before discharge. To meet these standards, Bonduelle had to install a treatment plant, creating a major source of biogas. Veolia – the site's energy provider –suggested using that biogas as feedstock in a small back-up boiler that had previously been put to little use.

Wastewater produces energy with Energido. Replacing fossil fuels by renewable resources thanks to permanent rather than intermittent sources (solar, wind) is now a possibility. Veolia demonstrates it with Energido, an innovation which allows recovering heat from wastewater. For example, municipal swimming pools can thus be fed with with 100% renewable energy.

Food and deep-frying oil becomes waste that is difficult to manage. It is now being given a second life. After an initial filtration stage to remove waste and water, the oil is recovered as a biodiesel at our plant in Limay, the only facility of its kind in France.
